Messer are the big brothers of the German-language post-punk wave of recent years. What particularly distinguishes the Münster-based band are their pictorial, gruff, even poetic lyrics. No wonder that Messer singer Hendrik Otremba is a writer in another life.
His second novel, "Kachelbad's Legacy," already published in 2019, is about German expatriate H.G. Kachelbad, who freezes people who can no longer live in their present for a cryonic enterprise in 1980s LA, and thus encounters numerous bizarre characters. Kachelbad's story takes us back in time to ponder the future.
Except for the name of the protagonist, which was used by Messer for an EP in 2016, the book does not have much in common with his music. Nevertheless, Hendrik's works spring from a similar mindset and are equally figurative, grim and twisted.
The project was funded within the framework of "Neustart Kultur" by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media through the German Literature Fund.
