Nick Hornby said he was writing books, because he cannot write pop songs. Jens Friebe can. Many celebrate him as Germany’s only pop star - others despise him persistently. Nevertheless he has produced three albums, with brains in his texts and heart in his voice. He did “The Hornby” as well and published the chronicle of a party year: 52 Wochenenden. 52 Wochenenden is about Friebe going out, standing around, doing a lot and making a night of it. He wittily shares about the profundities and trivialities of everyday life: My whistle stop and lonely appearance was, what should I say, fabulous. There were numerous technical problems, the mike stand sank permanently, so that in the end I sang with my head lying on the piano. People love things like that. They don’t want a performance going off without a hitch. They want you to stand your ground up there. At the Immergut Jens Friebe stands his ground with a reading at Birkenhain. No matter if warbling or devouring, in the end it will be the three letter word: P-O-P.
